Bjørn Munch, I have never seen a more helpful answer as long as I can remember. As soon as I pointed MySQL's binaries to /home/tomas/mysql/share using lc-messages-dir, everything started working as it was supposed to.

I'm using version 5.6.10 if anybody was curious :-)
