UDF & CHARACTER SET

Hi,
I'm currently building a small xml engine for mysql.
I found an overhead that seems to be related with character set conversion
I suppose that when an UDF function feeds a LONGTEXT variable text must be converted from single character, binary, to char according with database character set configuration.
If an UDF function, that is declared to return a string, feeds a binary variable such as LOGBLOB is there any character set conversion (I mean internally).
Does anyone knows how can I control explicitly the character setting of UDF function in order to avoid character set convertion
Many thanks,
VĂtor
