can I use select in UDF?

I want to use mysql to store realtime data which is based on time series. To reduce storage size, I want to compress data by save only changed data, means that most data record contains only flag instead of data. To restore data, I want to use UDF to find the neighboring record containing valid data, to calculate out the required data.

The question is, can I open the wanted data table to get the neighboring record in the UDF?
