You understood my problem well: how to tell the user that something is wrong in the UDF.

I'm a bit nervous about your solution because it could put garbage in our DB... So I will stick to the idea of returning NULL because we usually have non-NULL constraints so at least the query will be interrupted. However if NULL is a valid return value for the UDF, there is no way to report the error.

For you question about the component architecture, I have no idea what you're talking about but it sounds interesting.
