I did some more testing on this.

On a separate machine running Ubuntu, I was able to install the precompiled 5.1.24-rc x86_64 binaries and successfully create an event (using the same syntax as above).

I want back and manually inserted the data into the mysql.event table on one of the CentOS servers.

After this, I attempted to 'ALTER EVENT `a_test` DISABLE;' after which I received a similar error: ERROR 1538 (HY000): Failed to store event name. Error code 1 from storage engine.

I subsequently issued a 'DROP EVENT `a_test`;' on the same server and the data was deleted from the mysql.event table.

I was still not able to discover what "Error code 1" means.
