scheduled batch command

I'm trying to run a scheduled batch command of the form:

mysql> create event e_test on schedule every 1 day do source /var/www/home/test.sql;

This gives me:

ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax ..

while

mysql> source /var/www/home/test.sql;

works perfectly fine.

I tried running with '\. /var/www/home/test.sql' instead of 'source /var/www/home/test.sql' but that gives me:

Failed to open file '/var/www/home/test.sql;', error: 2

Any ideas would be appreciated.

(running mysql 5.1.49-3 (Debian) )
