Server starts with event scheduler set to off - can't change the default!

I'm using MySql 5.5 on Ubuntu 13.04

When the server is restarted, the Scheduler is always OFF and I have to start it manually.

In /etc/my.cnf I added, right after [mysql]:
event-scheduler = ON
I also tried with
event_scheduler = ON
(the documentation is conflicting as to whether it's with a dash or an underscore.

Either way, it doesn't work, and if I run "mysql --version" I get this:
mysql: unknown variable 'event-scheduler=ON' or
mysql: unknown variable 'event_scheduler=ON'

So what do I do? How can I start the server with the Event Scheduler set to ON?
