Clarification on Reference manual "byte"

Hi,

While reading the reference manual for MySQL 5.0, section 5.1.3 (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-system-variables.html), I was not sure how to interpret the following: "Values for buffer sizes, lengths, and stack sizes are given in bytes unless otherwise specified."

Is it bytes as in the C language (that can use more than 8 bits) ? Or "usual" bytes (i.e. octets) ?

Thanks in advance
