Hi Oliver;

The MySQL documentation team uses DocBook XML as our base documentation format:

http://www.docbook.org

With DocBook XML we can use Open Source tools to convert the XML to HTML, PDF, CHM, Info, TXT, etc using XSL stylesheets.

I plan to write this up a bit in the future, but in the meantine the link above contains an online version of a book on docbook.
