?! Nothing was cited as a "proof". As you say, MySQL uses the Gregorian system, and "quarter" has a commonly understood meaning in that context, illustrated by the Wikipedia page on that topic, illustrated too by OED and other dictionaries ("a period of three months regarded as one fourth of a year"), what Jon sensibly called "common sense". Naturally, accounting rules will often require custom fiscal year functions.
