RAID plus Mac OSX help

We have recently implemented a new Mac OSX 10.4-based server with RAID, but I'm finding it difficult to get the configuration right.

1) Even when logged in as Administrator, OSX won't let me see the .../mysql/data directory, so I can't copy the data files to the appropriate spot on the RAID drive.

2) If I try to direct MySQL server to /volumes/raid/mysql/data in the my.cnf file, I get a server that won't start at all.
