Have you considered replication? The SAN disk would hopefully be in a high performance setup like striping and you can still use that for the master database. But if you are looking for multiple servers to address heavy reads and local application access loading a replicated mysql copy on each system can work out well.

If you need higher performance look into MySQL Cluster.
