Multiple MySQL instances talking to the same SAN

Hi all,

I am just investigating setting up 2 MySql databases and want them to talk to a single SAN for fail-over purposes.

My question is, is it ever a good idea (or even possible) to have both RDBMS's pointing to the same physical space/ drive on the SAN? Or would you always have both instances of the database pointing to separate locations on the SAN, and then replicate the data.
