Just to add some more information that I have seen in various scenarios.

Generally NFS/CIFS = not so good for databases. The locking causes issues, as does the performance in most cases. The only real case where I would consider it, would be read-only MyISAM. As you said, most queries use indexes, which means that there will be quite a bit of disk seeking, not so much continous reads. Disk seeking is quite poor over NFS (and will become a bottleneck in almost any application).

If you can, something such as iSCSI (or fibre channel) will be much better. One of the big things is that they operate at the block level where as NFS is at the file level. Generally performance is will *much* better even with the same disk devices.
