Have a look at this http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/10/31/sata_spells_trouble_for_scsi_raid/
I am about to try the low end RocketRAID 2220 with a dual Opteron CPU machine and 4 200GB Spinpoint HDD.

Seems that a 2U case with 8 74GB Raptors in it and the Raidcore RAID controller with the dual Opterons would be a very cost effective database server.

My current rig is 4 200GB Spinpoints on a Dual 246 Opteron motherboard with 2GB RAM using software RAID5 on RHEL4, it manages insertion of 2000 records per second when my application bulk loads data. Basically it seems that the Opterons have so much processing power that the XOR calculations required for the low end RAID controllers barely registers.

Regards,

David
