MySQL remote storage (NAS, Snap Server, not cluster)

I am new and was reading about the MySQL Cluster configuration. That's almost what I'm looking for, but not quite.

We have a low volume setup on our network. We want to use a Snap Appliance (or other Network Attached Storage) as the storage / data drive for a database. (That would give us a very simple, low administration, back-up).

Is it possible to configure MySQL to look somewhere else other than the local drive for the database? I may be asking for the impossible, because of the architecture of MySQL, however as I didn't find documentation answering this, I'll ask here.
