You say you don't know much about ROLAP, so how did you decide to do relational OLAP rather than multidimensional or hybrid OLAP? I suggest that needs to be decided carefully.

Are you looking at Mondrian?
You're right to regard OLAP design as a separate project stage, even if the end result turns out to be minimalist, eg ROLAP summary tables bolted onto the OLTP database.
