Can't connect to local MySQL server

ciao a tutti,
per modificare sul mio macbook pro (lion osx) la password per accedere a mysql, ho crato un pasticcio...
in pratica quando vado a dare
/ usr / local / mysql / bin / mysql-st
la risposta è:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can not connect to local MySQL server through socket '/ tmp / mysql.sock' (2)
ho provato a riscaricare MySQL Community Server la versione per mac e 64bit "Mac OS X ver. 10.6 (x86, 64-bit)" e a reinstallare mysql-5.5.17-OSX10.5-x86_64.dmg, poi MySQLStartupItem e infine MySQL.prefPane (che non funziona: Non puoi aprire le preferenze MySQL perché questa operazione non è supportata dai computer Mac con processore Intel.)
grazie in anticipo a chi mi aiuterà arisolvere questo problema
