how to check my server status is online?

dear sir,
i'm totally blank in this software, and i'm just starting to learn about it.
i would like to host a website and the purpose is for receiving some information from all my user. but i'm setup how way and i would like to know that is there any problem on my server.
is there any way to check locally?
i'm appreciate in advance that all of you that helping me.
