Another case of 100% CPU Usage upon MySQL connection

Hi, I've read of a couple of similar situations to mine without a resolution.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, with Apache 2.2.8, PHP 5.2.5 & MySQL 5.0.51a.

Everything has been installed and setup correctly, it all works fine. I then added the SimpleMachinesForum and installed that fine too. It's after I've filled in the settings on the SMF install.php, that it naturally attempts to create the database for storage.
It's then that mysqld-nt shoots straight up to 100% CPU usage, and the server stops responding completely, I'm unable to view the pages I was browsing seconds before (the machine is still usable).
From what I can tell, it seems I'm getting k-lined at any sql connection, but I have no idea why.

Has there been a solution to this anywhere? Thanks in advance.
