MySQL or mysql-standard as you may encounter it on the web distribution lists is the standard version of MySQL.

MySQL-Max does include many new features, it was originally designed for
bigger systems. You will find things like InnoDB, for one. Basically the max version has stuff that the average user might not want or need.
