mysql -u root -p not working unless you are root

Hello,

I just installed MySQL 5.7 to an Ubuntu 18.04 and a Fedora 29 and in both cases I couldn't login using `mysql -u root -p` when I was a normal user, but I could if I was root itself, why is that like this now? How can I get it back so I can start using Workbench again?

Thanks.
