Hello Jim,

There's a class of compression algorithms that have acceptable compressionlevels, but much less overhead. See:

From my experience, you would need to determine if what you're trying to compress is actually compressible. What I used to do in another project is the following heuristic: compress the first 64K and if that doesn't yield at least a 10% saving, just don't do the compression on that field... ever. It usually means it's a compressed PDF and since the type of the blob isn't likely to change, I accept the few cases where my heuristic is dead wrong.
