Mixing Japanese and Latin characters

Hi.

One of my clients asked me to include a fourth language (in addition to EN, FR and NL) in his website: Japanese.
The website is developed with php and uses data from mySql tables.

I have no problems doing this in html, but when it comes to using data from mySQL tables all I get is gibberish.

Could you please let me know:
1. How I should create my database so that some fields can contain Japanese text
2. How I should create my php so that Japanese and latin characters display properly.

Thanks too all of you who can give me some concrete help on this issue.
