MySQL Server in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther (NOT MAC OS X SERVER)

I'm having trouble using MySQL with the Darwin terminal in Mac OS X. It seems to be installed but I can't use it fully. I can enter my password and get in but I can't create databases or show databases or anything like that and when I try to get to the directory where the package installs by default (for OS X Panther 10.3) I get this screen:

Welcome to Darwin!
unknown0030654c60d8:~ danielgood$ cd /usr/local/mysql/data
-bash: cd: /usr/local/mysql/data: Permission denied
unknown0030654c60d8:~ danielgood$

Many thanks for your time.
