--read-from-remote-server good idea for getting updates

Is it a good idea to do a dump of a live database and then do the remaining changes over a period of 2 days by reading in the binlog. If the boary logs are very big 2 gig, is it better to just do a mysqlbinlog --read-from-remote-server to read them directly from the remote host? Or is this really time consuming and resource intensive?
