Configuring Apache, MYSQL and PHP on Windows XP.

I am trying to use Apache, MySQL and PHP for the first time and not have much luck connecting to MySQL using PHP. I get the HTTP error 500.
Is there some configuration setting that I am missing?
Should I be using TCP/IP or named pipes?
