slow response on listing tables in database

An application (in Realbasic) has been working well at Client's site for a long time.

Suddenly it fails to connect to a remote MySql at website server.

We can connect with PhpMyAdmin OK and display list of tables within database OK.
We can connect with Mysql Query Browser utility OK, but clicking on a database to expand the list of tables (about 600) takes 50 secs. (Clicking on smaller databases is correspondingly quicker.)

It looks as if the program on the PC (both Realbasic and Php Query Browser) has suddenly started doing a handshake for every table in the database, which is silly.

Does anyone know if this can happen, and what can cause it (it certainly was not happening before)
