MySQL storing SQL_LOAD_MB files in /var/tmp instead of specified tmpdir

I recently noticed that my main hard drive on my server was filling up. When I found the culprit, I noticed that in /var/tmp there were a ton of SQL_LOAD_MB files. These appear to be data that is being loaded in thru mysqlimport or load data infile.

However, I have speicifed a tmpdir.

Why is MySQL not using this directory for it's storage? and how can I specify where it can store these files?

Running 5.0.50sp1a-enterprise on 10.5 Mac OS X Server.

Thanks.
