slave_compressed_protocol value in 4.1.11 Debian Etch

Hi,
I would like to know the value of slave_compressed_protocol in V4.1.11 on Debian Etch.
Show Variables does NOT give this variable.
I turned it on:
SET GLOBAL SLAVE_COMPRESSED_PROTOCOL=1;
There were no errors or warnings. I see nothing in the system log, on neither the Slave nor Master.
I would like to be able to verify its setting. How can I see that the Slave Compression is on?
