What is Best solution for DR and 24*7 using two identical systems, cluster is not available here(hw)

I have understod from other topics here that master-master replicate with
writing on both (with odd-even auto-increment) can cause problems hard to
recover from.
I want to have 100% uptime and still being able to close one system down
for maintenance. The plan was to have replicating both ways.
The hw setup is two identical systems:
Box 1: appl server(apache-php), db-server(MySQL 5.0)
Box 2: appl server(apache-php), db-server(MySQL 5.0)
There is a loadbalancer in front so taking one app server down will
have the effect all traffic going to the other one.
With replicating both ways, and catching up after a couple of hours downtime
at one box would make it automatic.

But I guess this solution may be somewhat insecure.
Depending on key columns for example...

Any other suggestions ?
