How do you do DDL in a Fabric environment?

...so far I find it necessary to alter tables in the current primary server of each group in a MySQL Fabric. I would have expected that altering tables in the current primary server of the global group would propagate to all groups, but this does not seem to be the case either for global or sharded tables.

The problem is that this means an outage is necessary to alter tables in all circumstances, because I have to stop updates to alter tables in all shards so that updates do not fail in the time between altering the table in question in the first group and altering it in the last group.
