This is a shitty product right now. It will take years to evolve. Don't waste too much time on it. If you open the source code you'll see it's full of junk.
For your usecase, if you open HashShardMapping.java you will see they are using just one instance of MessageDigest to create md5 digest. This is a multi-threading killer. You wont be able to use Hash mapping in multithreaded application. There will be frequent exceptions. As of now this product is suitable for college kids in pursuit of good for nothing college projects...
IMHO look for some other alternatives...
