It is sent to one proxy, the pictures shows the setup and the possible connections.
If one proxy can't be reached, the request goes to the other proxy. You can also use both of them all the time to have a array of load balancers. If one goes down, the load on the last ones goes up, that's all. They are stateless.
Are you using VRRP in hardware or uCARP in software to handle the failover ? I would like to see some blog article about VRRP + the proxy to show its extra features.
