daemon support just got added to SVN, syslog will follow.
I'll check out the init-script and try to get it into the next release.
BTW: please report any kinds of crashes to the bug-system. The code contains several assert()ions which you might trigger. As soon as we have a test-case we can add it to the test-suite and remove the assert().
