We are operating on the MySQL protocol level, but we try to be transparent to the application. While we are in the protocol anyway, we allow to play with the packets.
The proxy does many different things and be chained together when needed. e.g. when you have 2 load balancers, you want to have a way to fail-over too. This can easily implemented with a cascaded proxies.
For the RW split will to make it as transparent as possible too.
