Now that the Read/Write splitting works (read http://jan.kneschke.de/2007/8/1/mysql-proxy-learns-r-w-splitting) you can also implement the two discussed scenarios.

Execute SHOW TABLEs at connection time and store it globally and us this information for routing. Or parse out the comment to safe the SHOW TABLEs.

Keeping it in the proxy makes it more dynamic and keeps the application logic clean. Pretty handy if you can't change the code.
