No, no need to lookup on each query.
The tutorial just does a bit more than we need here. You can leave out the read_query_result() and its backend_ndx = 0 and it will keep the connection once it is selected.
Perhaps I should cut down the tutorial an split it into smaller pieces to show the steps.
