Hi! This is all about specifying backend servers. You can use rw and ro backands, to write to only one server, but all servers must be slaves and masters of others (chained replication). For failover I suggest you to use keepalived. And if rw backend fails, then VIP goes to second and if mysql-proxy is on same host then just starts it with custom parametrs, or not then restarts with changed rw backend vip (it can be done automatically - pretty easy). What does mysql-proxy if ro backend fails - it just marks it as dead and dont sent any querys to it.
