Proxy w/ mysql 4 clients

Could you provide any insight into what causes the crash w/ mysql 4 clients connected to proxy? I'm assuming it's some part of the protocol differences, but I was wondering what would be involved in making proxy compatible. If you could point out some references and give a starting point to where in the proxy source that would be then I'd be interested in attempting to fix that issue.
