Virtual PC + XP + MySQL 5 - Security Error

I was given a laptop with vista. It's terrible...so I installed Virtual PC 2007 running xp. I installed MySQL on the virtual instance. It installs and runs, but when I try to run the configuration wizard or simply try to connect to the server, I get a Error. 2003. MySQL can't make a connection to root@localhost....

I have opened up port 3306 on my host machine, turned of internet connection firewall on the virtual instance, nothing works. I even turned off my hosts firewall entirely, hoping to simply locate the issue. No luck. I read a blog about going to MySQL/bin/mysqld and run as "current user", I think I tried that but it appears the service running on my install is mysqld-nt, not mysqld. I know I have the right install files. So again confusing.

Anybody have any ideas here?
