Re: select now(); doesn't change
We had the same issue running a test tool against MySql on VMWare also on Solaris without replication (I.e., a single instance, no master-master or master-slave) involved.
What we found was we had only two processors allocated, and on Solaris this seems to throttle disk performance. When we upgraded to four processors the issue went away.
