Mysql Workbench 6.3.9 fails windows 10

Installed XAMPP 5.6.30. Installed Mysql Workbench 6.3.9. Can't bring up workbench control. Attempt to connect to database fails with mysql version conflict.

The log file shows:

[ERR][ Workbench]: Console redirection failed
