Need getting started help (probably trivial questions)

Just using workbench for the first time, a bit confused.
Top left it says:
Local instance 3306
root
localhost:3306
Question 1: Is that the DB user "root" or the system superuser "root"?
I then click on: Database -> connect to database.
Again I see Username: root
Q2, is this one the DB user "root" or the system superuser "root"?
I don't want to get confused this early, as I am having bad trouble getting connected to the DB.
