mysql workbench has stopped working

I have just downloaded MySQL Workbench but on starting up I get the message 'MySQL Workbench has stopped working'. The last entries of the log file read:
22:11:47 [INF][ WBContext]: WbContext::init
22:11:47 [ERR][ WBContext UI]: WBContextUI::init, exception 'Could not create directory C:\Users\Ian\AppData\Local\Temp/mysql-workbench-5096/: error code 5'
22:11:47 [INF][ Workbench]: UI is up
The directory ' C:\Users\Ian\AppData\Local\Temp' exists
This topic came up in the forum in 2014 but the answers weren't helpful and the topic is now closed. Any ideas?
