Different values for the same column

In workbench, when I do
show table status;
the collation column comes back with mostly utf8mb4. However, from the command line in mysql directly.. the collation column comes back as mostly utf8.
Why the discrepancy and which is the right answer?
Latest version of workbench 8.0.12 on ubuntu.
mysql version mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.7.23,
