Gridlines and titles not visible

Hi real Newbie here but this is driving me nuts and I can't find an answer:

When I run any SELECT query in Workbench the row data is displayed as I would expect - but there are no gridlines to separate rows and columns and there are no column headers. Just white space where the graphics should be.

Looking at images on the web, it seems that the Results Grid should display data in what I'd call a 'spreadsheet' style with the top row having a light grey background to hold column field names as row headers, but for me it's as if the gridlines and the column headers have simply been erased.

Everything else in Workbench displays and works perfectly

I'm running latest community server and latest workbench on an AWS Ubuntu server (20.04.3) with X Desktop through tigerVNC.
