db design question/unique row values

i'm designing a database for storing photos, and I don't want to be able to store two photos with identical names.

do I use the unique index function for that? Or should I make the filename the primary key?
Or should I have the java application that connects to the database check and not allow the value to be entered if there's a dupe?
