Varchar field type as primary key and basis of index

Hi,

My question is whether a field of varchar(45) constitutes a good primary key and is it efficient to create an index on this kind of key . This field contains a URI and is unique, but would it be better to create an auto-increment field as primary key and basis for index?
Thank you very much.
