Connecting to a MYSQL server

hello fellas,
I plan to use the workbench as the Data modelling tool for my next project. I came to know of it only recently.
I have no idea at all as to how could i connect to a MySQL DB server running on the same host.
Please point me to any link or tutorial if you know they exist.
